Schleswig MCP
Making local open data accessible to applications and AI assistants.
Public information about Schleswig is distributed across different publishers, formats, and publication cycles. Schleswig MCP combines selected local datasets behind a consistent REST API and a remote Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, both backed by shared application logic.
One data foundation, two interfaces
The REST API and MCP server share domain functions, source adapters, validation, and consistent data models. Five datasets are curated snapshots packaged with the application. The water-level endpoint is the exception: it queries an external provider at request time.

From general inference to dataset-backed answers
I asked Claude the same question about Schleswig's population projections for 2020–2040 with and without access to the Schleswig MCP integration. The comparison illustrates a difference in accessible source material, not a controlled benchmark of general model accuracy.
Without Schleswig MCP
Without the MCP tool, Claude used web search and could not locate a precise city-level forecast for the requested period. It presented regional context and clearly stated that its conclusion was an inference rather than a verified projection for Schleswig.

Without MCP. Claude cannot retrieve the requested local projection directly and returns a qualified, web-based inference.

With the MCP integration available, Claude retrieved the project's structured population forecast data. It returned the recorded values for 2020, 2030, 2035 and 2040 and explained the model's projected pattern.

With Schleswig MCP. Claude uses the population forecast dataset to provide a concrete table and a source-grounded explanation. These are projections from the underlying publication, not live population counts.

Once the dataset is accessible through MCP, a follow-up request can turn the retrieved values into a table and chart. The same source data supports a different task without manually searching and extracting the original publication again.

Visualization using MCP data. Claude produces a chart from the retrieved population projections. Its accompanying explanation notes that year intervals in the original chart are not displayed proportionally and that the vertical axis starts at 25,000, which visually exaggerates changes.

The service separates data provenance and validation from the public protocols. REST and MCP call the same domain functions, while each transport handles its own input and output contracts. Source metadata documents licenses, reference dates, and known limitations.
Five datasets are curated snapshots and are not refreshed automatically. Only the water level is queried live; a gauge reading is not a flood warning or an assessment of swimming safety. The project emphasizes traceable access to public data rather than claiming that all available data is complete or current.
Data provenance and source dates
The population projection shown comes from Wegweiser Kommune / Bertelsmann Stiftung (Open Data SH). Source metadata records publication on and modification on . These are not measurement or retrieval dates. The data combines historical inputs with projections through 2040; it does not represent current population counts.
The source is released under CC0 1.0. Original credits also name the statistical offices of the German states, the research data centers of the federal and state statistical offices, and Deenst GmbH. The data-source documentation explains preparation and known limitations; download and preparation timestamps are unknown.
Other sources include PEGELONLINE / WSV, LVermGeo SH, the monument register via Open Data SH, Sozialministerium S-H for bathing waters, and Bundesnetzagentur. Their respective source credits and licenses apply. Charging records do not show live availability, and registers are not necessarily exhaustive.
